c. 1915; photograph of the Belle Isle bridge fire, April 27, 1915 after a tar-heating cart tipped and started the fire; despite the efforts of 2 fire boats and several fire departments, almost all of the 26-year-old bridge burned; it was replaced with a temporary bridge in July 1916, which remained in place until a permanent bridge was completed November 1, 1923.
