Notes: c. 1969; "The only boat in the world with an exclusive Zip Code Number. (J.W. Westcott is postmaster of the Great Lakes.) The year 1969 begins the 75th year of direct ship-to-ship mail deliveries. Operates 24 hours-a-day from mid-April to mid-December. The Westcott II takes mail from the postal station on First Street in Detroit and meets Great Lakes freighters and keeps pace with the moving freighter while a crewman lowers a mailbucket down over the side and into the cabin of the mailboat, and in seconds hauls it up again. Then the Westcott is on its way to shore." |
