John Milne was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1838. He emigrated to Canada in 1841 and came to Essex Centre in the Summer of 1873. He started the Essex Centre Manufacturing Company, owned the Essex Centre Chronicle and the Canadian Workman newspapers, was a Justice of the Peace (1878-) and was Mayor of Essex Centre from 1889 to the mid 1890s. His house was built in 1882 and called Maple Villa; possibly an oil rig in the back garden?
