c. 1940; exterior view of the Edgewater Thomas Inn in Riverside; Bertha (Hef) Thomas, an eccentric widow from Detroit, purchased the small 3 room restaurant in 1920 and initially did all the cooking, serving and cleaning herself until she could afford more space and staff; in the 1920's it became a popular speakeasy with legendary false walls, hidden cellars, an underground dock and methods of alerting staff to an impending police raid; Bertha Thomas died in 1955 and a fire in 1970 revealed the hidden rooms; "fish, chicken, frog and steak dinners; phone Windsor 3-9555"
